TOLEDO, Ohio, September 21, 2011 – In honor of Toledo Executive Airport’s first year of operation under its new name, the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority will be unveiling its new sign at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow morning as a photo opportunity for local media outlets. The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority Board of Directors and Toledo City Council approved the name change to Toledo Executive Airport from Metcalf Field in the summer of 2010.
The name change was designed to help promote a Joint Economic Development District which includes the City of Toledo and Lake Township, as well as to better reflect the airport’s niche in business travel.
“This is a reflection of this facility’s market positioning as Toledo Executive Airport,” says Jerry Chabler, Airport Committee Chairman for the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority. “We want people to understand the role this airport plays in our aviation system in northwest Ohio, and to really adapt to referring to the airport as Toledo Executive.”
The airport, which features a 5,800 foot takeoff runway, has been managed by the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority since 1973. It is located in Millbury, Ohio and is primarily used for business purposes and privately owned aircraft.
Toledo Executive Airport first opened its doors in 1928 under the name Toledo Trans-Continental Airport. In 1955 – after commercial aviation moved to Toledo Express – the airport was renamed to Toledo Municipal Airport.
In 1976, the name changed again to honor Thomas A. Metcalf, a pioneer in local aviation development in northwest Ohio. Metcalf began flying as a pilot at the age of 18 and logged more than 10,000 flying hours during his career.
It is the mission of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority to continuously leverage our strategic geographic position, resources and economic development proficiency to provide increased business opportunities—built upon and around our innovative transportation and logistics expertise—while promoting our community and region within the global marketplace. We will accomplish this through unmatched speed and efficiency of service, collaborative and strategic partnerships, community stewardship and the continued generation and execution of new ideas and innovations.
